Medical tourism in Costa Rica for U.S. patients

Costa Rica is a short flight from the United States and is best known among U.S. patients for dental work: implants, crowns, veneers and full-mouth restorations. Most dental clinics that serve travelers are in the San José area, including Escazú and Rohrmoser, with a few near Liberia airport in Guanacaste. xcuro lists dental clinics in San José, Escazú and Playas del Coco, using only facts published by the clinics and independent Google ratings.

What Americans travel to Costa Rica for

  • Dental implants and All-on-4 / All-on-6 full-arch restorations
  • Crowns, porcelain veneers and full-mouth restoration
  • Root canals and other specialist dental care

Checking a dentist in Costa Rica

The Colegio de Cirujanos Dentistas de Costa Rica publishes a searchable registry of dentists that shows each dentist's code, whether they are active or suspended, and any registered specialty (CCDCR registry). On xcuro's Costa Rica clinic pages we note which dentists we found in that registry and with what status.

The State Department notes that Costa Rica has elective and cosmetic surgery facilities that can match U.S. ones but that quality varies, that some U.S. citizens have had serious problems or died during or after cosmetic or elective surgery, that legal options in case of malpractice are very limited, and that people with unpaid bills, including medical bills, may be stopped from leaving the country (State Department, Costa Rica).

Getting there and how long to stay

U.S. visitors need a passport valid for the length of their stay and a return or onward ticket; authorities may allow up to 180 days without a visa. Single implants usually take two trips a few months apart (surgery, then the final crown); veneers and crowns usually take about a week. The State Department rates Costa Rica Level 2, “Exercise Increased Caution”, because of crime.

Whatever the destination, the CDC recommends seeing a travel-medicine provider before you go, bringing copies of your medical records, arranging follow-up care at home before surgery, and waiting 10 to 14 days before flying after major surgery. Complications treated after you return may not be covered by U.S. insurance.

Getting there

Two international airports serve U.S. flights: San José (SJO) and Liberia (LIR) in Guanacaste. Nonstop flights leave from many U.S. hubs; from Miami or Houston the flight is about 3 hours. Costa Rica stays on UTC−6 all year, the same as U.S. Central Standard Time.

Entry rules change without much notice. Confirm them with the authority above before you book anything.
