Why Americans choose Tijuana
Distance. Tijuana is across the border from San Diego, in the same time zone as California, so you avoid a long flight soon after surgery and can come back for a follow-up visit. We work with two clinics in Baja California: VIDA Wellness and Beauty Center in Tijuana, whose facility is accredited by QUAD A, the same body that accredits U.S. outpatient surgery centers, and Hospital VELMAR in Ensenada, about 1.5 hours' drive south.
What it costs, and how much you really save
Savings in Mexico are real but smaller than many ads suggest. A tummy tuck costs $4,500 to $9,000 at our partner clinics against $6,000 to $12,000 in the U.S.; a BBL $4,500 to $8,300 against $6,000 to $16,000 or more; a nose job $3,200 to $5,400 against $5,000 to $15,000; breast augmentation $5,700 to $7,000 against $6,000 to $12,000 including implants (Cherry, 2026). If a surgeon near you quotes the low end of the U.S. range, the saving may disappear once travel is added.
How to check your surgeon
Plastic surgeons in Mexico are certified by the Consejo Mexicano de Cirugía Plástica, Estética y Reconstructiva (CMCPER), the counterpart of the American Board of Plastic Surgery; you can look surgeons up in its directory. Every doctor also needs a professional license (cédula profesional) listed in the government registry. For a BBL in particular, ask whether fat is injected only under the skin: the American Society of Plastic Surgeons warns that fat injected into the muscle can cause a fatal fat embolism.
Crossing the border
- Fly into San Diego, or into Tijuana and use the Cross Border Xpress bridge from the airport.
- Coming back by land you need a U.S. passport, passport card, enhanced driver's license or a trusted-traveler card such as SENTRI.
- Check border wait times on the CBP website before you cross.
Safety
The U.S. State Department sets its Mexico advisory state by state. Baja California is at Level 3, Reconsider Travel, because of crime and kidnapping, although U.S. government employees face no extra restrictions in Tijuana, Ensenada or Rosarito and most violence happens outside tourist areas. Use clinic transfers, and read the advisory before you book.
Insurance and taxes
Cosmetic plastic surgery is not covered by U.S. health insurance, and the IRS does not treat it as a medical expense (IRS Publication 502). The CDC also warns that treating complications after surgery abroad can be expensive and may not be covered by your U.S. plan, so line up follow-up care at home before you go.
