Liposuction in Mexico: pros and cons for U.S. patients
- Multi-area packages can cost far less than per-area U.S. pricing ($3,000–$7,000 per area).
- Tijuana borders San Diego, so the trip home is short.
- CMCPER-certified surgeons; VIDA's facility is accredited by QUAD A.
- Same time zone as California.
- For a single small area, the saving may disappear once travel is added.
- Only two partner clinics in Mexico for this procedure.
- The U.S. State Department rates Baja California Level 3, “Reconsider Travel”.
- Follow-up care happens back home, and treating complications may not be covered by U.S. insurance (CDC).
How much does liposuction in Mexico cost?
The two Baja California clinics we work with quote $3,499 to $7,499 (Hospital VELMAR, Ensenada) and from $4,500 (VIDA Wellness and Beauty Center, Tijuana). In the United States, liposuction typically costs $3,000 to $7,000 per treatment area, and anesthesia, compression garments and follow-up visits are usually extra, according to Cherry's 2026 data. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons' average of $4,711 is the surgeon's fee alone.
The fair comparison is per area. A Mexican package that covers the abdomen, flanks and back can save a lot against three separately priced U.S. areas; a single small area may save little once travel is added. Ask every clinic exactly which areas its price covers.
What is lipo 360?
Lipo 360 is liposuction of the whole midsection in one operation: the abdomen, the flanks and the lower back. Because it treats several areas, it is where packages abroad tend to show the biggest difference from per-area U.S. pricing. It is still liposuction, not a weight-loss operation: it removes fat from specific areas and works best close to a stable weight. If you have lost a lot of weight, including after bariatric surgery, loose skin is usually the bigger issue, and a tummy tuck may suit you better than liposuction.
You can start with a free virtual consultation: send photos of the areas you want treated and ask each board-certified plastic surgeon which areas they would include and why.
How long you need to stay
Plan on about a week nearby. You wear a compression garment for several weeks, swelling goes down over the first weeks, and the final contour shows after a few months. Ask how many areas are planned, how long the operation will take and whether you will stay overnight.
Ask the surgeon how much fat they plan to remove in one session. Large-volume liposuction and combining it with other operations make the surgery longer and raise the risks.
Getting to Tijuana, Mexico from the U.S.
- Fly into San Diego. Nonstop flights take about 6 hours from New York, 4.5 from Chicago and 3 from Dallas. Ask your clinic whether it arranges pickup.
- Coming back by land, you need a U.S. passport, a passport card, an enhanced driver's license or a trusted-traveler card such as SENTRI.
Hospital VELMAR is in Ensenada, about 1.5 hours' drive south of Tijuana.
How to check your surgeon
Plastic surgeons in Mexico are certified by the Consejo Mexicano de Cirugía Plástica, Estética y Reconstructiva (CMCPER); you can look a surgeon up in its directory. Every doctor also needs a professional license (cédula profesional) listed in the government registry. VIDA's facility is accredited by QUAD A, a U.S. accreditation body for surgery centers.
Paying for it: insurance and taxes
Liposuction is cosmetic surgery: it is not covered by U.S. insurance, and the IRS names it among procedures you generally can't count as a medical expense (IRS Publication 502).

Before you travel: what the CDC recommends
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention publishes guidance for Americans travelling abroad for medical care. These are its recommendations, not ours.
- Check the qualifications of the clinician who will perform the procedure and the credentials of the facility.
- Bring copies of your medical records, including lab and other test results related to your condition.
- Make sure you can get follow-up care in the United States. Care for complications can be expensive and might not be covered by your health insurance.
- Obtain international travel health insurance that covers medical evacuation back to the United States.
- See your own healthcare provider 4–6 weeks before the trip to discuss risks specific to your health.

Evidence on Liposuction: Safety, Outcomes and Realistic Expectations
14 peer-reviewed sourcesLiposuction is one of the most studied body-contouring procedures, and the evidence base ranges from randomized and controlled metabolic studies to large safety analyses and systematic reviews. A key finding repeated across high-quality work, including a landmark New England Journal of Medicine study, is that liposuction reshapes the body but is not a treatment for obesity and does not by itself reliably improve insulin sensitivity or cardiovascular risk factors. Safety research highlights that serious complications are uncommon when volume limits, fluid management and accredited-facility standards are respected, while fatal outcomes are strongly linked to combined procedures, large-volume aspiration and inadequate monitoring. A growing literature also supports liposuction as a therapeutic option for lipedema, where it can reduce pain and improve function. The references below emphasize systematic reviews, controlled studies and safety guidance so expectations stay grounded in data.
