Why two sources give different numbers

The two U.S. data sets on this page measure different things, so read them together.

  • Synchrony's 2026 study surveyed practices in all 50 states and D.C. and reports the average cost of a procedure: $5,675 for FUT and $6,344 for FUE, with ranges of $3,919 to $9,759 and $4,417 to $10,640.
  • Cherry reports what patients actually financed at its partner practices in the first quarter of 2026, by metro area: $7,000 in Atlanta, Boston, Miami and San Francisco, up to $15,000 in Los Angeles. Cash payments are not included.

The survey figure is an average across practices; the Cherry figure is what financed patients paid in each city. Your own price depends mostly on how many grafts you need. Other published ranges are similar: GoodRx puts the typical cost at $6,000 to $12,000, with some procedures above $15,000.

What makes a hair transplant cost more or less

Number of grafts

The biggest factor. The more area you want covered and the more donor hair you have, the more grafts are moved, and the longer the surgery takes. Many U.S. practices quote a price per graft; others quote per session. To compare quotes, ask every clinic how many grafts the price covers.

Technique: FUT or FUE

In follicular unit transplantation (FUT), the surgeon removes a thin strip of scalp from the back of the head and divides it into grafts. In follicular unit extraction (FUE), each graft, a small group of hair follicles, is taken out individually with a small punch. FUE takes longer and costs more on average: $6,344 against $5,675 for FUT in Synchrony's study. Some practices use robotic systems for FUE; ask whether that changes the price.

Where you live

State averages for FUE run from $5,497 in Arkansas to $7,705 in California, a difference of about $2,200 for the same procedure. Metro prices vary even more: the Cherry average in Los Angeles is more than double the one in Atlanta.

Who does the work

Fees also depend on the surgeon's experience and on how much of the operation the physician performs personally. The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) says diagnosis, surgical planning, graft harvesting and making the recipient sites should be done by a licensed physician, and warns against clinics where unlicensed technicians operate. Check whether the surgeon is board certified, for example by the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery, and a member of ISHRS.

Extras

Some clinics add platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections or medications. They are usually priced separately: one Houston practice lists PRP at $1,000 per session when added to a transplant. Ask whether the quote includes follow-up visits.

Does insurance cover a hair transplant?

Almost never. Health insurers treat hair transplants as cosmetic surgery. The IRS also lists hair transplants among cosmetic procedures you can't count as a medical expense (Publication 502), and HSA and FSA rules use the same definition (Publication 969). In rare cases insurance may cover surgery for hair loss caused by a health condition; ask your insurer in writing.

Paying over time

Many U.S. practices offer financing options such as CareCredit or Cherry, which spread the cost over monthly payments, subject to credit approval. Check the interest rate and what happens if a promotional period ends before you have paid in full.

Is it cheaper to get a hair transplant abroad?

Yes, often by a wide margin. The five Istanbul clinics we work with quote $1,500 to $4,500 for a session, usually with the hotel, transfers and an interpreter included. A round-trip flight to Istanbul typically costs $740 to $1,180 from New York and $780 to $1,260 from Los Angeles (Kayak). See the table above and our guide to hair transplants in Turkey.

The trade-offs are real. Your follow-up care happens back home, complications may not be covered by U.S. insurance (CDC), and Turkish rules allow certified non-physician assistants to harvest grafts, which ISHRS opposes. Ask any clinic, at home or abroad, who will perform each step of your surgery. Compare the hair transplant clinics in Turkey side by side.

How to compare quotes

  1. Get the price for the same number of grafts from each clinic, and whether that number is guaranteed or an estimate.
  2. Ask which technique (FUT, FUE, robotic FUE) and why it suits you.
  3. Ask who performs each step, and whether everyone involved is covered by malpractice insurance.
  4. Ask what is included: medications, PRP, follow-up visits, a touch-up session.
  5. Ask about financing terms before you sign, not after.
  6. Ask to see before-and-after photos of patients with hair loss like yours. A natural-looking hairline depends on the surgeon's design as much as on the number of grafts.

Medications such as minoxidil and finasteride are an alternative or a complement to surgery for some people. Talk to a dermatologist about whether they suit you.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a hair transplant cost in the U.S.?

On average $5,675 for FUT and $6,344 for FUE, according to Synchrony's 2026 survey of practices in all 50 states and D.C., with ranges from $3,919 to $10,640. By city, patients who financed through Cherry in early 2026 paid $7,000 to $15,000 on average.

Is FUE more expensive than FUT?

Yes, on average. Synchrony's 2026 study puts FUE at $6,344 and FUT at $5,675, because FUE grafts are removed one at a time and the surgery takes longer.

Which state has the cheapest hair transplants?

In Synchrony's 2026 data, the lowest FUE averages are in Arkansas ($5,497), Mississippi ($5,528) and Alabama ($5,598). The highest are in California ($7,705), Washington, D.C. ($7,524), Hawaii ($7,289) and New York ($7,214).

How much is a hair transplant in Los Angeles or New York?

Cherry's 2026 metro averages, based on amounts patients financed, are $15,000 in Los Angeles and $9,800 in New York. Synchrony's survey averages for FUE are $7,705 statewide in California and $7,214 in New York.

Does insurance cover a hair transplant?

Almost never. Insurers treat it as cosmetic surgery. Coverage is possible only in rare cases where hair loss is caused by a health condition, so ask your insurer in writing.

Can I use my HSA or FSA, or deduct a hair transplant from my taxes?

Generally no. IRS Publication 502 lists hair transplants among cosmetic procedures that are not medical expenses, and HSA and FSA eligibility follows the same definition (Publication 969).

Why do hair transplant prices vary so much?

Mostly because of the number of grafts, the technique (FUE costs more than FUT), the surgeon's experience and where you live. State averages for FUE differ by about $2,200, and metro averages by $8,000.

How much does a hair transplant cost in Turkey?

The five Istanbul clinics we work with quote $1,500 to $4,500 per session, usually with the hotel and transfers included. A round-trip flight adds about $740 to $1,180 from New York or $780 to $1,260 from Los Angeles (Kayak).

Can I pay for a hair transplant in monthly installments?

Many U.S. practices accept medical financing such as CareCredit or Cherry, subject to credit approval. Read the terms of any promotional period before you sign.

Should I compare prices per graft or per session?

Per graft, or at least for the same number of grafts. A low session price can cover fewer grafts. Ask each clinic how many grafts its quote includes and whether that number is guaranteed.
