What the price of a dental implant includes

A replacement tooth on an implant has three parts: the implant (a titanium post placed into the jawbone, where it acts as the root of a natural tooth), the abutment that connects it, and the crown, the visible tooth. Most published U.S. averages, including the $2,143 on this page, cover the implant and its placement only.

  • Single implant: $2,143 on average, ranging from $1,646 to about $4,160 (Synchrony).
  • Porcelain crown: $1,399 on average; crowns range from $488 to $3,254 depending on the material (CareCredit).
  • So a complete tooth costs roughly $3,500 or more before the abutment, extractions or bone grafting.

Delta Dental puts a single implant without dental benefits at $2,800 to $5,600. When you compare quotes, ask every dentist for the price of the whole tooth: implant, abutment and crown.

Full mouth dental implants and All-on-4

For a full arch, a common option is a fixed bridge on four or six implants, known as All-on-4 or All-on-6. Synchrony's averages are $15,176 for All-on-4 and $12,474 for 3-on-6.

All-on-4 is placed per arch, so a full mouth, upper and lower jaw, means two procedures. Ask whether a quote covers one arch or both, whether the teeth are acrylic or zirconia, and whether temporary teeth, extractions and follow-up visits are included.

What makes dental implants cost more or less

How many teeth, and how

One implant, an implant-supported bridge ($5,195 on average) and a full-arch bridge are very different jobs. Immediate-load implants, where a temporary tooth goes on the same day, average $3,255.

Bone grafting and extractions

If the jawbone is too thin, it has to be built up before implant surgery. An implant with bone augmentation averages $5,580, more than twice a standard implant. Removing damaged teeth is billed separately.

The crown material

Crowns range from $488 to $3,254. Porcelain averages $1,399, porcelain fused to metal $1,114 and metal $1,211 (CareCredit).

Where you live

The average single implant ranges from $1,790 in Alabama to $3,565 in Hawaii. Massachusetts ($2,781) and California ($2,730) are also near the top.

Does insurance cover dental implants?

Often not, or only in part. Many dental plans treat implants as elective, though some help pay for the crown (CareCredit). How much you pay depends on your plan and whether your dentist is in network (Delta Dental). Original Medicare does not cover dental implants in most cases (Medicare.gov); some Medicare Advantage plans include dental benefits, so check yours.

Unlike cosmetic procedures, dental treatment and artificial teeth are on the IRS list of medical expenses (Publication 502), so implants that replace missing teeth can generally be paid from an HSA or FSA. Confirm with your plan administrator.

Alternatives to implants

Dentures and bridges cost less and are more often covered by dental insurance. They usually last up to about 15 years, while the implant itself is a long-term solution that can last a lifetime; the crown on an implant may need replacing after 10 to 15 years (CareCredit). Your dentist can tell you which options suit your mouth.

Are dental implants cheaper abroad?

Yes. At Sani Dental Group in Los Algodones, Mexico, about 15 minutes from Yuma, Arizona, an implant is $890 and the crown with abutment $720, so a complete tooth is about $1,610. All-on-4 costs $8,110 to $9,710 per arch, depending on materials and implant brand (Sani price list). At Dentakay in Istanbul, a complete tooth starts at €558 (about $626) and a full arch costs €3,529 to €8,619 (about $3,960 to $9,680) per jaw.

Implants usually need a few months of healing before the permanent crown goes on, so you may need two trips. Ask the clinic about its timeline and its warranty, and line up a dentist at home who will see you for follow-up care, as the CDC recommends. See our guides to dental implants in Mexico and dental implants in Turkey.

How to compare dental implant quotes

  1. Ask for the price of the complete tooth (implant, abutment and crown), not the implant alone.
  2. Ask which implant brand is used and the crown material.
  3. Ask whether extractions, bone grafting, X-rays or a CT scan are included.
  4. For full-arch work, ask whether the price is per arch or for both, and what the temporary teeth cost.
  5. Ask about the warranty and what happens if an implant fails.
  6. Check whether your insurance, HSA or FSA can pay for part of it, and read the terms of any financing.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a dental implant cost in the U.S.?

A single implant costs $2,143 on average, ranging from $1,646 to about $4,160, according to Synchrony's cost study. That covers the implant and its placement; the crown adds $488 to $3,254 ($1,399 on average for porcelain), so a complete tooth is roughly $3,500 or more.

Does the price of a dental implant include the crown?

Usually not. Most U.S. averages, including Synchrony's $2,143, cover the implant post and its placement. The abutment and crown are extra, so ask every dentist for the price of the complete tooth.

How much do full mouth dental implants cost?

A common option for a full arch is a fixed bridge on four or six implants. Synchrony's averages are $15,176 for All-on-4 and $12,474 for 3-on-6. All-on-4 is placed per arch, so a full mouth means two procedures; ask whether a quote covers one arch or both.

Which state has the cheapest dental implants?

In Synchrony's data the average single implant is lowest in Alabama ($1,790), Oklahoma ($1,806) and Arkansas ($1,825), and highest in Hawaii ($3,565), Massachusetts ($2,781) and California ($2,730).

Does insurance cover dental implants?

Often not, or only in part. Many dental plans treat implants as elective, though some help pay for the crown. Original Medicare does not cover dental implants in most cases, while some Medicare Advantage plans include dental benefits.

Can I use my HSA or FSA for dental implants?

Generally yes. IRS Publication 502 lists dental treatment and artificial teeth as medical expenses, so implants that replace missing teeth usually qualify. Purely cosmetic work does not. Confirm with your plan administrator.

Why are dental implants so expensive?

An implant is a surgical procedure followed by a custom crown, often months apart, and many patients also need extractions or bone grafting. Bone augmentation alone pushes the average implant to $5,580.

Are dental implants cheaper in Mexico?

Yes. At Sani Dental Group in Los Algodones, an implant is $890 and the crown with abutment $720, about $1,610 for a complete tooth, and All-on-4 costs $8,110 to $9,710 per arch. Los Algodones is about 15 minutes from Yuma, Arizona.

How much are dental implants in Turkey?

At Dentakay in Istanbul, a complete tooth starts at €558 (about $626) and a full arch costs €3,529 to €8,619 (about $3,960 to $9,680) per jaw. Add a round-trip flight of about $740 to $1,180 from New York.

How long do dental implants last?

The implant itself is designed to last a lifetime, but the crown on top may need replacing after 10 to 15 years because of normal wear (CareCredit).
