Porcelain or composite: what you are paying for
A veneer is a thin, tooth-colored shell bonded to the front of a tooth, and the most common part of a cosmetic dentistry smile makeover. Porcelain veneers are made in a lab and, with proper care, last 10 to 20 years or more. Composite veneers are resin, either built up on the tooth in the office or made in a lab; they cost less but typically last five to seven years (CareCredit).
- Porcelain: $1,455 per tooth on average, $1,020 to $2,506.
- Porcelain laminate: $1,781, $1,243 to $2,997.
- Composite made in a lab: $1,068; made in the office: $751.
How much is a full set of veneers?
A "full set" usually means the six to eight upper teeth that show when you smile. Synchrony's 2026 average for a full set is $13,954, with a range of $9,712 to $24,046. Ask whether a quote covers the upper teeth only or both arches, and how many teeth.
What makes veneers cost more or less
Number of teeth and material
Price is per tooth, so the number of teeth matters most. Porcelain and laminate veneers cost more than composite.
Where you live
The average porcelain veneer ranges from $1,257 in Mississippi to $1,771 in California. Washington, D.C. ($1,727) and Hawaii ($1,665) are also at the top.
Preparation and extras
Traditional veneers need tooth preparation: the dentist removes a thin layer of enamel so the veneer sits flush. So-called no-prep or minimal-prep veneers remove little or no enamel, but they are not suitable for every tooth. Prices do not include the consultation or later maintenance and repairs (CareCredit), and some patients need gum or decay treatment first, which is billed separately. If you grind your teeth, ask your dentist about protecting the veneers.
Does insurance cover veneers?
Usually not. Dental insurers treat veneers as an elective cosmetic procedure, not a medically necessary one (CareCredit). For the same reason, purely cosmetic dental work generally does not qualify as a medical expense for an HSA or FSA (IRS Publication 502). If a veneer restores a damaged tooth, ask your insurer and plan administrator in writing.
Are veneers cheaper abroad?
Much cheaper per tooth: see the table above for the prices our partner clinics in Mexico and Turkey publish. The catch is quality control. "Turkey teeth" became a byword for heavily shaved-down teeth covered with crowns sold as veneers; once enamel is removed, it does not grow back. Ask any dentist, at home or abroad, how much enamel will be removed, whether you are getting veneers or crowns, and what the warranty covers. Read our guides to veneers in Mexico and veneers in Turkey.
How to compare veneer quotes
- Compare the price per tooth, the number of teeth and the final price for the whole case.
- Ask whether you are getting porcelain, laminate, zirconia or composite, and why.
- Ask how much enamel will be removed, and whether any tooth will need a crown instead.
- Ask what the warranty covers and who repairs a chipped veneer once you are home.
- Ask to see before-and-after photos of the dentist's own patients.
