The cost of liposuction depends on the treatment area

Liposuction is a body contouring procedure priced by treatment area: the more areas treated, the higher the price. Common areas include the abdomen, flanks, thighs, upper arms, chin and face. Treating the whole abdomen averages $7,491, the lower abdomen alone $4,777 and the upper abdomen $3,688. Smaller areas such as the chin ($3,861) and face ($3,615) cost less. A Lipo 360, which treats the whole midsection, ranges from $4,851 to $12,628 (CareCredit).

Technique

Most surgeons use tumescent liposuction, injecting a fluid that numbs the area and limits bleeding before the fat is removed. Some surgeons offer VASER (ultrasound-assisted) or power-assisted liposuction, which loosen the fat first and are often used for larger areas or sculpting; ask whether they change the price.

Where you live

For the whole abdomen, state averages run from $6,482 in Arkansas to $9,111 in California, with Washington, D.C. ($8,880) and Hawaii ($8,554) also near the top.

Who liposuction suits

Liposuction removes stubborn fat from specific areas; it is not a weight-loss operation and does not tighten loose skin. The best candidates are close to their goal weight with firm, elastic skin, and fat can return to other areas if you gain weight later. After major weight loss, loose skin is usually the bigger issue, and a tummy tuck may suit you better.

Does insurance cover liposuction?

Usually not, because it is considered cosmetic and not medically necessary (CareCredit), and cosmetic surgery is not an HSA-eligible expense (IRS Publication 502).

Is liposuction cheaper abroad?

Often; the table above shows what our partner clinics quote for liposuction. Prices abroad are usually quoted per area or per package, so ask exactly which areas are included. Read our guides to liposuction in Turkey, Mexico, South Korea and Thailand.

How to compare quotes

  1. Ask whether the price covers the surgeon fee, anesthesia fees and the surgical facility, or the surgeon's fee alone.
  2. Check that you are seeing a board-certified plastic surgeon who operates in an accredited facility.
  3. Look at before-and-after photos of patients like you, from the same surgeon.
  4. Ask what follow-up visits, garments and medication are included, and what a revision would cost.
  5. If you travel, arrange follow-up care at home before you go, as the CDC advises.

Many U.S. practices offer financing options such as CareCredit or Cherry, subject to credit approval; read the terms of any promotional period before you sign.
