Why facelift prices vary so much
Type of facelift
Most facelifts today work on the SMAS, the layer of muscle and connective tissue under the skin, rather than only pulling the skin. A deep plane facelift releases this layer more extensively and is the most expensive, at $12,747 to $32,459. A mini facelift lifts the lower face through shorter incisions, and an awake facelift runs $3,722 to $9,233.
What is included
Synchrony's $12,327 average does not include anesthesia or the operating room, so the total you pay is higher. Ask for a quote that includes both, and whether a neck lift, often done with a facelift, is included.
Where you live
State averages run from $10,677 in Arkansas to $15,019 in California, with Washington, D.C. ($14,567) and New York ($14,082) also near the top.
Does insurance cover a facelift?
No. A facelift is a cosmetic procedure and is not traditionally covered by health insurance (CareCredit), and it does not qualify as a medical expense for an HSA or FSA (IRS Publication 502).
Is a facelift cheaper abroad?
Often, and the saving can be large for a full or deep plane facelift; the table above shows what our partner clinics quote. Make sure every quote names the technique, because a mini facelift and a deep plane facelift are very different operations. Read our guides to facelifts in Turkey, Mexico and South Korea.
How to compare quotes
- Ask whether the price covers the surgeon fee, anesthesia fees and the surgical facility, or the surgeon's fee alone.
- Check that you are seeing a board-certified plastic surgeon who operates in an accredited facility.
- Look at before-and-after photos of patients like you, from the same surgeon.
- Ask what follow-up visits, garments and medication are included, and what a revision would cost.
- If you travel, arrange follow-up care at home before you go, as the CDC advises.
Many U.S. practices offer financing options such as CareCredit or Cherry, subject to credit approval; read the terms of any promotional period before you sign.
