What a BBL involves, and why it affects the price

A Brazilian butt lift is a buttock enhancement that combines liposuction with a fat transfer: fat is removed from areas such as the abdomen or flanks and injected into the buttocks. How much liposuction you need, and the aftercare, change the total (CareCredit).

Where you live

State averages run from $6,971 in Arkansas to $9,812 in California, with Washington, D.C. ($9,553) and Hawaii ($9,229) also near the top.

Why a cheap BBL can be a dangerous BBL

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) warns that fat accidentally injected into the buttock muscle can cause a fat embolism and death. Current guidance is to inject fat only under the skin, never into or beneath the muscle; ASPS points to ultrasound guidance and a limit of two or three such procedures per surgeon per day as ways to make it safer. It also warns against discount clinics where people who are not qualified surgeons operate. ASPS has said a safe BBL by a board-certified plastic surgeon can run $12,000 to $18,000, so treat a price far below the averages here as a question to ask, not a bargain.

Does insurance cover a BBL?

No. A BBL is cosmetic, so the procedure and any complications from it are generally not covered by health insurance (CareCredit), and it is not an HSA-eligible expense (IRS Publication 502). Check whether a travel or complications policy would cover you before you book.

Is a BBL cheaper abroad?

Often; the table above shows what our partner clinics quote. Ask every clinic, at home or abroad, how the fat is injected, whether ultrasound is used and how many BBLs the surgeon does in a day. Read our guides to BBL in Turkey and Mexico.

How to compare quotes

  1. Ask whether the price covers the surgeon fee, anesthesia fees and the surgical facility, or the surgeon's fee alone.
  2. Check that you are seeing a board-certified plastic surgeon who operates in an accredited facility.
  3. Look at before-and-after photos of patients like you, from the same surgeon.
  4. Ask what follow-up visits, garments and medication are included, and what a revision would cost.
  5. If you travel, arrange follow-up care at home before you go, as the CDC advises.

Many U.S. practices offer financing options such as CareCredit or Cherry, subject to credit approval; read the terms of any promotional period before you sign.
