Check your insurance first

Breast reduction is the exception among breast surgeries: health insurance may pay for it when large breasts cause chronic back, neck or shoulder pain, grooves from bra straps or skin rashes and it is considered medically necessary. Criteria differ between insurers, you may need authorization first, and you will still owe copays or deductibles (CareCredit). The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) has reported that insurance denials became more common over the 2010s, so ask your surgeon to help with an appeal before you give up on coverage. Many insurers also set a minimum amount of tissue to be removed per breast.

If you go abroad, you will almost certainly pay yourself, so compare the full price at home after insurance with the price abroad.

What the price depends on

Where you live

The average cost of breast reduction in Synchrony's 2026 survey is $8,579. Its state table, from the 2023 study, runs from $8,411 in Ohio to $9,846 in Arizona.

What is included

The surgeon's fee is only part of the bill: the hospital or surgical center, anesthesia and operating room may be charged separately (CareCredit). Ask for a complete quote.

Lift or reduction

A reduction removes tissue and usually lifts the breast at the same time. A lift alone, without removing tissue, averages $7,792 and is not covered by insurance.

Is a breast reduction cheaper abroad?

If insurance will not pay, often yes; the table above shows what our partner clinics quote. Read our guides to a breast reduction in Mexico and Turkey.

How to compare quotes

  1. Ask whether the price covers the surgeon fee, anesthesia fees and the surgical facility, or the surgeon's fee alone.
  2. Check that you are seeing a board-certified plastic surgeon who operates in an accredited facility.
  3. Look at before-and-after photos of patients like you, from the same surgeon.
  4. Ask what follow-up visits, garments and medication are included, and what a revision would cost.
  5. If you travel, arrange follow-up care at home before you go, as the CDC advises.

Many U.S. practices offer financing options such as CareCredit or Cherry, subject to credit approval; read the terms of any promotional period before you sign.
