Ophthalmology

1 procedures

Ophthalmology covers laser vision correction such as LASIK and SMILE, cataract surgery with lens implantation, and treatment of the retina and cornea. Refractive surgery is elective and almost never covered by U.S. insurance, which is why it travels well. Note that quotes are given per eye in the United States and often for both eyes abroad — compare on the same basis. Ask which laser platform and which intraocular lens will be used, since these vary in price and in what they correct, and confirm who provides the post-operative checks in the first weeks after you return.

Frequently asked questions

Does U.S. insurance cover eye surgery abroad?

Most U.S. health plans do not pay for elective surgery abroad, and cosmetic procedures are not covered at all. The CDC warns that care for complications after surgery abroad may not be covered either.
