Overview
Bone marrow transplantation, or haematopoietic stem cell transplantation, replaces diseased or damaged bone marrow with healthy blood-forming stem cells. In allogeneic transplantation the stem cells come from a matched donor, while in autologous transplantation the patient's own cells are collected and reinfused after high-dose conditioning chemotherapy. It is used to treat leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and certain non-malignant disorders. Recovery involves a prolonged period of close monitoring for infection and graft-versus-host disease.
