Overview
Proton therapy is an advanced type of external-beam radiotherapy that uses a beam of protons rather than conventional X-rays. Protons deposit most of their energy directly at the tumour and then stop, sparing healthy tissue beyond the target (the Bragg peak effect). This precision makes it valuable for tumours near critical structures and for paediatric cancers, where reducing radiation to developing tissue is important. Treatment is delivered over multiple painless outpatient sessions.
