Overview
High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a non-invasive, radiation-free treatment most commonly used for localised prostate cancer. Focused sound waves are delivered through a transrectal probe to precisely heat and ablate cancerous tissue while sparing adjacent nerves and structures, which helps preserve continence and erectile function. It is usually performed as a day-case procedure under anaesthesia. HIFU may be offered as whole-gland or focal therapy in suitable patients.

Will U.S. insurance pay for HIFU abroad?
Most U.S. health plans do not pay for elective surgery abroad, and cosmetic procedures are not covered at all. The CDC also warns that care for complications after surgery abroad may not be covered, so check your plan before you book.
