Is It Safe to Get Dental Work in Turkey? A 2026 Guide for U.S. Patients
Turkey is famous for cheap veneers and crowns, and for “Turkey teeth”. Here is what dentists back home most often have to repair, and the questions to ask before anyone touches your teeth.
Is it safe to get dental work in Turkey?
For most patients, yes, with a qualified dentist and a realistic plan. The American Dental Association notes that many dental procedures are surgical and may need months of healing, and that “the use of fresh gloves, sterile instruments and safe water is not standard practice in all countries” (ADA). Turkey is one of the most popular destinations for veneers and crowns, and UK dentists see the results: in a 2022 British Dental Association survey, 86% of dentists who had seen patients treated abroad had to fix problems afterwards, most often crowns and then implants. Repairs cost more than £1,000 in about half of the cases they reported (BDA survey).
On the travel side, The U.S. State Department rates Türkiye Level 2, “Exercise Increased Caution” (reissued June 2026), and says not to travel within 10 km of the borders with Syria and Iraq; Istanbul is far from both (advisory).
The “Turkey teeth” problem
“Turkey teeth” is the nickname for teeth ground down for crowns or veneers. The BDA survey lists over-prepared teeth, ill-fitting crowns, lost implants and treatment done despite untreated gum disease among the problems UK dentists had to repair (BDA survey). Before you agree to anything:
- Ask whether you will get veneers or crowns, and how much tooth will be removed.
- Ask for a written plan with every tooth and every item priced, implant brands and crown materials.
- Have your gums checked first. Crowns or implants placed on untreated gum disease can fail.
- Ask what the warranty covers and whether you must return to Turkey to use it.
How to check a dental clinic in Turkey
- Health tourism authorization. Since 2025, a clinic or hospital that treats foreign patients needs Türkiye's International Health Tourism Authorization Certificate, and so does any agency that arranges your trip (2025 regulation, art. 5). HealthTürkiye, the Ministry of Health's official health-tourism platform, lists authorized agencies (HealthTürkiye). Ask the clinic for its certificate number.
- Ask for the dentist’s name and qualifications, and whether they are insured for complications, as the BDA advises (BDA).
- Arrange follow-up with a U.S. dentist before you go, as the ADA advises, and check whether your insurance will cover it (ADA).
Timing your trip
Implants usually need two trips months apart, and the ADA notes that surgical dental work can need months of healing (ADA). Don’t let a short trip push you into more treatment than you need.
