U.S. State Department: Level 2 – Exercise Increased Caution (issued April 2, 2026), due to crime. The advisory says petty crime is common throughout Costa Rica and that violent crime, including armed robbery, homicide and sexual assault, also affects tourists. Medical risk depends on the clinic and the procedure; the CDC advises checking the facility's credentials and arranging follow-up care in the U.S. before you travel.
Usually not for planned treatment abroad, and Original Medicare generally does not pay for care outside the United States. Ask your insurer in writing before you book, and buy travel health insurance that covers complications and medical evacuation, as the CDC recommends.
Check the license and accreditations, read the independent reviews yourself, ask who will treat you and what the written quote includes, and line up a doctor at home for follow-up care before you travel.
