Hospitals and clinics in Mexico at a glance

Sorted by independent ratings on Google and Trustpilot, weighted by the number of reviews, so a 4.9 from 20 reviews does not outrank a 4.7 from 8,000. Ratings show patients' experience, not medical outcomes. Clinics cannot pay for their position, and partner clinics are not moved up: how we choose clinics.

How to choose a hospital in Mexico

Check the license and accreditation. Ask for the certificates and check them with the body that issued them. JCI status can be looked up in JCI's directory.
Read the reviews yourself. Open the Google and Trustpilot pages linked above and read the recent and the negative reviews, not just the score.
Get the quote in writing. It should say who treats you, what is included, how long you stay and what happens if there is a complication.
Plan follow-up at home. The CDC advises arranging follow-up care in the U.S. and travel insurance that covers medical evacuation before you go.

Checking a clinic in Mexico: Hospitals in Mexico are licensed by COFEPRIS, the federal health regulator. Some surgical centers also hold U.S. accreditation from AAAASF (now QUAD A), and plastic surgeons are certified by CMCPER, which keeps a public directory.

Getting to Mexico from the U.S.

Entry. U.S. passport holders travel without a visa for up to 180 days. A passport book is required for air travel, and a tourist permit (FMM, issued digitally at airports) is required on arrival. Official source

Flights. The shortest trip of any destination we work with. Nonstop flights to Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey and Cancun from most large U.S. hubs, 2 to 5 hours; Tijuana is reachable on foot from San Diego.

U.S. State Department advisory. The advisory is set state by state. Baja California, where Tijuana and Ensenada are, is at Level 3 – Reconsider Travel, because of crime and kidnapping; U.S. government employees face no extra restrictions in Tijuana, Ensenada or Rosarito, and most violence happens outside tourist areas.
