Plastic & Aesthetic Surgery in Thailand: pros and cons for U.S. patients

Pros
  • Lower prices for smaller operations such as liposuction and breast augmentation.
  • Surgery in private hospitals.
  • State Department Level 1 for Bangkok.
Cons
  • About 20 hours each way with a connection.
  • Only two partner hospitals so far.
  • Follow-up visits are hard to arrange from the U.S.

Why Americans consider Thailand

Price and hospitals. Bangkok has a large private hospital sector used to international patients. We work with two Bangkok private hospitals, Wansiri Hospital and Asia Hospital, so surgery, anesthesia and the hospital night happen in one building.

What it costs, and when it is worth it

At our partners, breast augmentation costs about $2,100 to $9,600 against $6,000 to $12,000 in the U.S. including implants, and liposuction $1,500 to $2,000 per quote against $3,000 to $7,000 per area (Cherry, 2026). For bigger operations such as a tummy tuck ($4,700 to $6,100 against $6,000 to $12,000), the saving shrinks once you add flights of $660 to $1,250 and two weeks' stay. For most Americans, Mexico is the shorter and often cheaper trip; Thailand makes most sense for smaller operations, or if you want to combine treatment with a longer stay.

How to check your surgeon

Every doctor in Thailand must be licensed by the Medical Council of Thailand, which offers an online license check. Plastic surgeons complete specialty training certified by the Royal College of Surgeons of Thailand, and many belong to the Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons of Thailand. Confirm in writing who will operate.

Visa and travel

Since September 15, 2026, U.S. passport holders can stay up to 30 days without a visa, extendable once by 30 days; file the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card online before arrival. There are no nonstop flights from the U.S. The State Department rates Thailand Level 1, with higher levels near the Cambodian border and in the far south, far from Bangkok.

Before you book

The CDC recommends arranging follow-up care at home before surgery abroad and waiting 10 to 14 days before flying after major surgery. Cosmetic surgery is not covered by U.S. insurance, and complications treated after you return may not be covered either.

Before you travel: what the CDC recommends

  • Check the qualifications of the clinician who will perform the procedure and the credentials of the facility.
  • Make sure you can get follow-up care in the United States. Care for complications can be expensive and might not be covered by your health insurance.
  • Obtain international travel health insurance that covers medical evacuation back to the United States.
  • See your own healthcare provider 4–6 weeks before the trip to discuss risks specific to your health.
