How much does breast reduction in Mexico cost?
VIDA Wellness and Beauty Center in Tijuana quotes $3,700 to $3,800 and Hospital VELMAR in Ensenada $6,299. In the U.S., the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports an average surgeon's fee of $7,800, before anesthesia and facility fees.
Check your U.S. insurance first
Unlike most cosmetic surgery, breast reduction is often covered by U.S. health insurance when large breasts cause back, neck or shoulder pain, skin irritation or grooves from bra straps. Insurers usually require documentation from your doctor and sometimes a minimum amount of tissue removed. If you qualify, surgery at home may cost you less than paying cash in Mexico. If you are not covered, Mexico offers a substantial saving.
What the operation involves
Done under general anesthesia, the operation removes glandular breast tissue, fat and skin and lifts the nipple. Scars usually go around the areola and down to the crease, sometimes along the crease. Many patients report relief from back and neck pain soon after recovery.
Recovery and how long to stay
Plan on about a week nearby. You wear a support bra for several weeks and avoid heavy lifting for about a month. From Tijuana, the trip home can be a short drive.
How to check your surgeon in Mexico
Plastic surgeons in Mexico are certified by the Consejo Mexicano de Cirugía Plástica, Estética y Reconstructiva (CMCPER); you can look surgeons up in its directory. Every doctor also needs a professional license (cédula profesional) listed in the government registry. VIDA's facility in Tijuana is accredited by QUAD A, a U.S. accreditation body for surgery centers.
Getting there and back
Fly into San Diego, or into Tijuana and use the Cross Border Xpress bridge. Coming back by land you need a U.S. passport, passport card, enhanced driver's license or a trusted-traveler card such as SENTRI. Hospital VELMAR is in Ensenada, about 1.5 hours' drive south of Tijuana.
The CDC warns that treating complications after surgery abroad can be expensive and may not be covered by your U.S. plan.

- Check the qualifications of the clinician who will perform the procedure and the credentials of the facility.
- Bring copies of your medical records, including lab and other test results related to your condition.
- Make sure you can get follow-up care in the United States. Care for complications can be expensive and might not be covered by your health insurance.

What the research says about breast reduction (reduction mammaplasty)
14 peer-reviewed sourcesReduction mammaplasty is one of the most studied procedures in plastic surgery, with a large body of systematic reviews and meta-analyses examining its effect on physical symptoms, complications, and psychological wellbeing. Pooled evidence consistently links surgery for symptomatic macromastia with meaningful improvements in pain, function, and quality of life, alongside high patient-reported satisfaction on validated tools such as the BREAST-Q. Research also clarifies modifiable risk factors for wound healing problems, including body mass index, smoking, glycemic control, and resection weight, helping surgeons counsel candidates and reduce complications. The studies below span technique comparisons, mental-health outcomes, and adjuncts such as tranexamic acid and nerve blocks.
