Check your U.S. coverage first
A knee replacement for arthritis is a medical operation, not a cosmetic one, so if you have Medicare or a private plan, it will usually pay for much of the surgery at home. Medicare usually doesn't pay for care outside the United States (Medicare), and a private plan rarely pays for planned surgery abroad. Turkey makes most financial sense if you are uninsured, have a very high deductible, or your plan has denied the operation.
If you pay yourself, surgery to treat a medical condition generally counts as a medical expense under IRS Publication 502, so HSA or FSA funds may be usable; check with your plan.
What a knee replacement involves
More than 700,000 total knee replacements are performed in the U.S. every year. The surgeon replaces the damaged surfaces of the knee joint with metal and plastic parts. You start walking with a cane, crutches or a walker soon after surgery; most people return to most normal activities within 3 to 6 weeks and can drive after about 4 to 6 weeks. More than 90% of modern knee replacements are still working well 15 years after surgery (AAOS).
Risks to discuss
According to the AAOS, serious complications such as a joint infection occur in fewer than 2% of patients, and major medical complications occur even less often. Blood clots in the leg veins are one of the most common complications, and can be life-threatening if they travel to the lungs, which is why the timing of your flight home matters.
What the price usually includes — and what to confirm
Large Turkish hospitals usually give an itemized written quote after a doctor reviews your X-rays. Ask yours to confirm in writing:
- Is the implant included, and which brand and model will be used? Ask for the implant sticker for your records.
- How many hospital nights, which tests and how many physical therapy sessions are covered?
- Are anesthesia, blood-clot prevention medication and a walker or crutches included?
- Are an interpreter, airport transfers and a hotel after discharge part of the price?
- What happens, and who pays, if there is an infection or another complication?
Flights, hotel nights after discharge, a companion's costs and travel insurance are usually extra.
How long you need to stay
Plan on about two weeks in Istanbul. The knee replacement itself usually needs at least one night in hospital, but the CDC advises delaying air travel for 10 to 14 days after major surgery, because flying after surgery raises the risk of blood clots, which the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) lists among the most common complications of joint replacement. On the flight home, which is about 10 hours to the East Coast and 13 to the West Coast, walk the aisle often and follow your surgeon's clot-prevention plan.
How to choose a hospital and surgeon
- All the hospitals above are listed on xcuro as JCI-accredited; you can confirm this on Joint Commission International's list of accredited organizations.
- Ask for the surgeon's name, their Turkish specialist title in orthopedics and traumatology, and how many knee replacements they perform a year.
- Ask for a physical therapy plan for your days in Istanbul and written instructions for your therapist at home.
- Book a physical therapist and an orthopedic follow-up visit at home before you go. Bring copies of your medical records, as the CDC advises, and take home your operative report and implant details.

Before you travel: what the CDC recommends
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention publishes guidance for Americans travelling abroad for medical care. These are its recommendations, not ours.
- Check the qualifications of the clinician who will perform the procedure and the credentials of the facility.
- Bring copies of your medical records, including lab and other test results related to your condition.
- Make sure you can get follow-up care in the United States. Care for complications can be expensive and might not be covered by your health insurance.
- Obtain international travel health insurance that covers medical evacuation back to the United States.
- See your own healthcare provider 4–6 weeks before the trip to discuss risks specific to your health.

What the research says about total knee replacement
14 peer-reviewed sourcesTotal knee replacement (total knee arthroplasty) is a well-established treatment for advanced knee osteoarthritis, supported by large registry datasets, randomised trials, and systematic reviews. Long-term pooled analyses suggest that the majority of modern knee implants survive 15 to 25 years, and most patients experience meaningful reductions in pain and improvements in function. Current research compares alignment strategies, robotic-assisted versus conventional techniques, and the factors that influence patient satisfaction, which can be more variable than for hip replacement. Outcomes are shaped by patient factors, implant design, and rehabilitation, so realistic expectations are important.
