What otoplasty involves
Otoplasty sets prominent ears closer to the head or reshapes the ear by folding and stitching the cartilage, through an incision behind the ear where the scar is hidden. It is often done under local anesthesia with sedation in adults and takes one to two hours. It can be done on one or both ears.
Who is a candidate
Otoplasty suits protruding or overly large ears, or ears misshapen by injury. It can be done once the ears have reached full size, usually from about age five or six, and is common in adults too. The result is permanent, because the ear cartilage is reshaped and held with permanent stitches.
Recovery and how long to stay
Plan on four to five days in Istanbul. You wear a headband day and night at first, then at night for several weeks. Most people return to work within a week.
How to check your surgeon in Turkey
- Check that the surgeon holds a Turkish specialist title in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery; some also hold the European board qualification (EBOPRAS / FEBOPRAS).
- Confirm in writing that the surgeon you consulted is the one who will operate.
- Ask how many of these operations the surgeon performs a year, and for before-and-after photos of patients similar to you.
Insurance and taxes
Cosmetic surgery is not covered by U.S. health insurance, and the IRS does not treat it as a medical expense (IRS Publication 502). The CDC warns that treating complications after surgery abroad can be expensive and may not be covered by your U.S. plan.
