Face Contouring in South Korea: pros and cons for U.S. patients
- Facial bone contouring is a routine operation in Korean clinics.
- Many quotes are well below the U.S. average.
- CCTV law: you can ask for your surgery to be recorded.
- State Department Level 1, the lowest advisory level.
- A bone operation with a longer recovery and real nerve risks.
- Two weeks in Seoul, then a long flight.
- Some cosmetic clinics are run by doctors who are not plastic surgeons.
- Follow-up care happens at home, and complications may not be covered by U.S. insurance (CDC).
How much does facial contouring in Korea cost?
The six Seoul clinics we work with quote between $2,200 and $10,000. In the U.S., V-line jaw reduction averages about $10,000 (CareCredit). Korea is one of the few places where facial bone contouring is a routine cosmetic operation, and the price depends on how many areas are treated.
The procedures
- V-line surgery (jaw reduction) narrows and reshapes the lower jaw, often combined with chin surgery for a slimmer, tapered lower face.
- Zygoma (cheekbone) reduction narrows wide cheekbones.
- Genioplasty moves, shortens or narrows the chin bone; a chin implant is a simpler alternative.
These are bone operations done under general anesthesia, usually with incisions inside the mouth, and often with a night in hospital. Surgeons plan them with a CT scan.
Risks to discuss
Facial contouring is more serious than most cosmetic surgery. Risks include numbness of the lower lip and chin from nerve injury, which is usually temporary but can be permanent, asymmetry, bleeding and, rarely, fractures. Choose a plastic surgeon who performs these operations often, and ask about their complication rates and how revisions are handled.
Recovery and how long to stay
Plan on 10 to 14 days in Seoul. Swelling is significant for the first weeks; most of it settles within a few months, and the final shape can take six months or more. You will be on a soft diet at first.
Protect yourself in Korea
Since September 25, 2023, Korean clinics that operate on unconscious patients must have cameras in the operating room, and you can ask for your surgery to be recorded; a clinic may refuse only for narrow reasons, in writing, and footage is kept for at least 30 days. Check that your surgeon is a board-certified plastic surgeon and a member of the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons; in Korea, cosmetic procedures are also offered by doctors from other specialties. Confirm in writing who will operate.
Getting there
U.S. passport holders need no visa for short visits and no K-ETA through December 31, 2026; an electronic arrival card is required. Nonstop flights take about 13 hours from Los Angeles and over 15 from New York. The State Department rates South Korea Level 1, “Exercise Normal Precautions”.
Insurance
Cosmetic surgery is not covered by U.S. health insurance, and the IRS does not treat it as a medical expense (IRS Publication 502). The CDC warns that treating complications after surgery abroad can be expensive and may not be covered by your U.S. plan.

Before you travel: what the CDC recommends
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention publishes guidance for Americans travelling abroad for medical care. These are its recommendations, not ours.
- Check the qualifications of the clinician who will perform the procedure and the credentials of the facility.
- Bring copies of your medical records, including lab and other test results related to your condition.
- Make sure you can get follow-up care in the United States. Care for complications can be expensive and might not be covered by your health insurance.
- Obtain international travel health insurance that covers medical evacuation back to the United States.
- See your own healthcare provider 4–6 weeks before the trip to discuss risks specific to your health.

What the Research Says About Facial Contouring Surgery
14 peer-reviewed sourcesFacial contouring encompasses a range of skeletal and soft-tissue procedures, including reduction malarplasty, mandibular angle osteotomy, genioplasty, and buccal fat reduction, used to reshape the proportions of the face. The peer-reviewed literature below comprises systematic reviews, meta-analyses, randomized trials, and large retrospective series that examine aesthetic outcomes, complication rates, and patient satisfaction across these techniques. Evidence indicates that contemporary approaches can achieve durable changes with generally low complication rates when performed by experienced surgeons, though risks such as asymmetry, nerve disturbance, and bleeding remain documented. Studies comparing osseous genioplasty with implant-based augmentation, and intraoral versus other approaches, help clarify the trade-offs between techniques.
